read GMail labels as AutoTags
there is an obvious correspondence here
Perhaps there is some API to get the list of tags on the currently displayed thread or mail blotter
If so, then expose those within ManicTime in some way to match on selected ones via AutoTagging rule

This information is stored in the DOM, so I think browser plugins are the only way to go. I'll add it to our todo list.

It would be nice if there were a way to get GMail itself to render its current labels into the page title, but that does not seem to exist, yet.
Perhaps via a Chrome extension, or something? Make a contribution to the wider software community in the process of improving your own solution?
